USAID Global Workshop on Education and Development: From Evidence to Action
DLP Researcher Susy Ndaruhutse (CfBT) was a plenary speaker at this year’s “USAID Global Workshop on Education and Development: From Evidence to Action” between the 22nd-25th August in Virginia, USA.
The main purpose of the workshop was to demonstrate the strategic importance of education in achieving US government development goals, and to provide critical and cutting edge training and orientation to USAID education and capacity development sector staff and their present and potential partners.
Susy Ndaruhutse’s session is entitled “Mobilizing Higher Education for Developmental Leadership” and was based on DLP Research Paper 10: Laura Brannelly, Laura Lewis & Susy Ndaruhutse (2011) “Higher Education and the Formation of Developmental Elites: A Literature Review and Preliminary Data Analysis”, which represents the first stage of a larger research project by DLP on Higher Education and its importance for successful and sustainable development. The research asks “Does Higher Education have a role to play in facilitating the emergence of developmental leaders and elites?...[H]ow do developmental leaders emerge and acquire the necessary skills and values to lead? How might higher education influence this process and how can it contribute towards improved governance?” (Brannelly, Lewis & Ndaruhutse, 2011: v).
