Princeton University Program: Innovations for Successful Societies
Policy-makers, researchers and practitioners can learn a great deal about the detailed complexity of the politics of reform from the direct experiences of reform leaderships in developing countries and elsewhere. The Innovations for Successful Societies program at Princeton University is building a series of easily-accessible case studies and recordings of one-to-one interviews with developmental leaders from around the world. This rich source of information will be of great value to those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the role which developmental leaderships and coalitions can play in promoting positive but locally appropriate institutional and policy innovation and reform in the diverse structural, institutional and political contexts of their own countries.
What do the stories of reform leaders teach us about how governments deliver basic services, limit corruption, and carry out core tasks more effectively in challenging contexts? Innovations for Successful Societies (ISS), a joint program of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Mamdouha S. Bobst Center for Peace and Justice, was founded to help practitioners and academics learn from such experiences.
ISS recently released a revamped web-based idea bank containing resources for scholars as well as public sector leaders, the site provides free and quick access to 60 case studies on public sector innovation, based on more than 1250 interviews in 45-plus countries. The site also includes transcripts and audio files of about 275 interviews with public sector reform leaders from around the globe.
ISS’s website is the product of a larger research program on building accountable and effective institutions in challenging contexts.
